Before the Cleansweep and Comet brooms hit the market in droves, several individual crafters created brooms that added to the lore of the wizarding broom. It wasn't until these two racing broom pioneers started producing mass quantities of their products that the racing broom became a full-fledged industry.
Before and since, several individual crafters and startup companies have created brooms of various quality and number, though the sheer manufacturing power of the Cleansweep, Comet and Nimbus companies makes them the exception instead of the rule. However, there are some of note:
Moontrimmer: Designed by Gladys Boothby in 1901, it was a wildly popular sporting broom. Its innovation of a slimmer handle and charms allowed it to reach higher heights. However, Gladys was not able to keep up with production demand.
Silver Arrow: Leonard Jewkes built upon the success of Boothby's Moontrimmer by crafting the Silver Arrow, the next big step in brooms. It was the first broom capable of reaching seventy miles per hour (with a tailwind), yet Jewkes was also unable to keep up with demand. The popularity of this broom waned with the smashing success of the Cleansweep 1.
Tinderblast: In 1940, the Black Forest Company released the Tinderblast. The company founders, Ellerby and Spudmore, crafted a broom that was highly resilient, but not as fast as the Comet or Cleansweeps. It became ideal for Beaters.
Swiftstick: In, 1952, the Black Forest Company crafted the Swiftstick. It was faster than the Tinderblast, though it tended to lose power as it ascended, thus it never gained the popularity of the more notable racing brooms.
Shooting Star: In 1955, Universal Brooms Ltd. released the Shooting Star as a less expensive alternative to the Comets and Cleansweeps. The Shooting Star was initially quite popular and is still flown by many amateur witches and wizards today, yet it has been known to lose speed and height with age. Recently, Universal Brooms has fallen upon hard times and there is talk of the company folding.
Darkefell 100: In 1975, a young prodigy, Donelle Darkefell, crafted the Darkefell 100 while still in her fifth year at Hogwarts. This amazing broom bested the Nimbus 1000 in speed, which prompted the company to craft the Nimbus 1001. These brooms were made in limited quantity for Donelle's friends and she has since moved on to join the professional ranks. A 200 series was produced, but it was crafted exclusively for the Magical Law Enforcement office.
