Restrictions: Students will not enter the common area of a house other than their own, rooms belonging to members of the opposite sex except in an emergency (Prefect rooms excluded), or leave their dormitories after curfew. Curfew is at 9 PM on weeknights and 10 PM on weekends; the only exception is for midnight Astronomy classes. Students may not enter "out of bounds" areas of the school, including leaving grounds without express permission or entering the restricted section of the library. They may not remove books from the library without the Librarian's approval.
First year students are reminded that they may not bring brooms to school. They may only fly under the supervision of a teacher or flying TA and they should not be targetted with real bludgers. No offensive or inappropriate materials are permitted on the premises. Forbidden substances include nicotine, alcohol and drugs. (Butterbeer is not considered sufficiently alcoholic to fall under this prohibition.) A full list of magical items which are forbidden on the premises may be found in the caretaker's office. Broomriding is restricted to the Quidditch Pitch or Flying Yard, where lessons take place, and is forbidden in all other areas.
Magic: Magic is not to be performed against other students except in practice, and under the supervision of a Professor. Magic not covered in class or assigned reading should not be attempted unless supervised by a qualified staff member. The practice of Dark Magic, by any student for any reason, is grounds for immediate expulsion and notification of the Ministry of Magic. Exceptions may be granted for advanced Defence Against the Dark Arts students, at the discretion of the DAtDA Professor or the Headmaster *only*.
Classwork and Behaviour: All homework must be completed to the best of the students ability. Students will be polite and attentive during all classes, will obey instructions from, and address all members of the staff with suitable respect at all times. Students must attend all classes on their schedule, and shall be punctual and consistent in their attendance. Students will not chatter, pass notes, or otherwise be disruptive during any class, nor will they run or be boisterous inside. Damage, defacement or theft of school or student property is forbidden. Bullying will not be tolerated, with fighting and rough behaviour forbidden except as part of a supervised sport such as Quidditch or Duelling.
PDAs: When RPing affectionate behaviour, it is important to keep in mind the theme. This is a conservative boarding school in the '70's UK folks. Thanks the the wonders of slow aging in Wizards, some Professors may have actually been around in the Victorian era!
Hallways, the Great Hall, the Courtyard, etc - these are not places for students to grope one another. These are places where portraits, ghosts, gargoyles, Prefects and Professors have eyes in the back of their heads. Even if there are no PC authority figures present, please assume that in public they are about and RP accordingly. If you want to be affectionate, take it to a private room. Public in-character scenes should restrict content of a romantic nature to embraces, chaste kisses, and holding hands. Please keep in mind that tolerance varies depending on whom you're busted by - a very old-fashioned Professor might take away points for kissing in public at all while a Prefect might let more slide. See 'news rating' for more information on this. In theme, 'alternate' relationships such as homosexuality are often met with extreme prejudice -- the late 70's saw it removed as a 'disorder', but a profound stigma remained.
Dress code: Students must comply with the school dress code during class hours and school functions, consisting of uniform robes over proper garments (dress slacks, knee length skirts, etc) with allowance for tasteful jewellery. During other times (while in their House Commons in the evening, on weekends, or on trips to Hogsmeade for older students), students must wear appropriate clothing, but are not required to wear full uniforms.
Pets: Students are permitted to bring one pet to school with them, chosen between an owl, rat, cat, or toad. No other pets are allowed.
Heading Off Campus: Students are only allowed off-campus during term for two reasons: Hogsmeade weekends and family emergencies. Hogsmeade weekends are set by the staff, and the staff reserves the right to discontinue them if the IC situation becomes dire enough to make them dangerous. Students may leave school in certain situations with express permission from their parent or guardian, who must also be present to pick up the student. Suitable excuses for this are death in the family or something equally as extreme. If you need to arrange such a pick-up, please contact the staff.
Visitors: Visitors will be very rarely permitted, and all such visitors must be screened by the Ministry of Magic and approved by the Headmaster. Visitors shall be limited to those with a definite and important purpose. In general, personal visits will not be allowed, save for extenuating and extreme circumstances. Please ask a staff member before engaging in any such role-play.
