Hogwarts Express MUSH

The complete list of classes offered by Hogwarts for the purposes of this MUSH and the professors teaching them are listed on the game in '+teachers'. This newsfile discusses which classes students take when.

In their first and second years, students have no choices in their class selection. All students take Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, History of Magic, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration. These are "core" courses at Hogwarts, and are taken by all students through fifth year. First year students also take Flying.

At the end of their second year, students choose two electives to take starting in their third year. Courses available are: Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, Healing Arts, Hearth and Home, Muggle Studies, and Vocational Studies. Anyone wishing to take more than nine courses during this period must submit a "Generic" Application.

Students take their Ordinary Wizarding Levels, or OWLs, in all nine of their courses at the end of their fifth year. These are basic tests intended to evaluate their proficiency in a topic.

After they take their OWLs, students are no longer required to attend Hogwarts (see 'news dropouts'). Most will, but those who have no plans to go into jobs that require higher education and are impatient to get on with their drop out. At this point, students focus on the courses they plan to take Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests (NEWTs) in and drop all their other classes. NEWT prep courses are more focused and demanding than regular classes. The lectures aren't any longer, but the workload is much heavier. Most students will take 2-3 NEWTs in topics relating directly to the sort of work they wish to do once they graduate. Only those trying for jobs such as Auror or Healer will take five. Anyone wishing to take more than five NEWTs must submit a "Generic" Application.

Students must explicitly name the classes they're taking. This should be set in info-classes.
