Hogwarts Express MUSH

Offered from the third year to the seventh, Muggle Studies educates young Wizards and Witches about the alternative lifestyle lived without magic. Students learn about the wonders of mundane technology and culture.

Third Year: Students are introduced to Muggle culture through study of the current fads. The Professor often brings in artifacts - clothing, games and common household items - for viewing. Due to the high amount of magic in Hogwarts, any item that operates on technology will not work.

Fourth Year: Muggle governments, especially those in the United Kingdom and other European countries, are studied. Students are also exposed to the bizarreness of photographs that don't move, musical instruments that don't automatically tune themselves and how to cook without magically lighting fires or conjuring special ingredients.

Fifth year: Telephones, television, automobiles and radios are studied. Since these objects are so complicated, this takes a good portion of the year. The remainder is spent reviewing concepts discussed in the two previous years.

For the OWLs: Students must be able to identify Muggle objects, listing their properties and explaining how they work. Through essays, they must also be able to describe how Muggle governments work and give details about pop culture and history.

Sixth year: The basic laws of physics are taught to students, and they are also given a run-down on the way electricity works. They are also introduced to chemistry and biology. English literature - from such authors as Shakespeare, Tennyson and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - is assigned as necessary reading.

Seventh year: Studies in physics, electronics, chemistry and biology continue. More reading is assigned.

For the NEWTs: Since technology does not work well within Hogwarts, due to the presence of magic, students are examined through tests and essays rather than practicals. They are tested extensively on their knowledge of Muggle science and literature, covering all material in their sixth and seventh years.
