Hogwarts Express MUSH

The Healing classes begin in a student's third year at Hogwarts, and they focus upon the different medical techniques used in the Wizarding world. Healing is vastly different when compared to Muggle medicine, for students are taught the different properties of herbs, potions and chocolate. There is also a wide array of spells that will stop bleeding, heal wounds and preserve a life from perishing. Very little technology is involved.

Third year: Students are introduced to the very basics of medicine, working mainly in text books. The four humours of the body, how illness is caused by imbalance of these humours and anatomy are all discussed. The properties of healing and harmful herbs are studied, and the theories behind leeching are covered. Basic Healing Charms are introduced.

Fourth year: Further study of the body's humours is conducted, though studies begin focusing more on certain body systems and the ailments commonly found plaguing each. Students are now permitted to begin mixing their own healing potions, with some of the more common being Pepperup Potion, Sleeping Draught and Wound-Cleaning Potion. Basic Healing Charms are continued. Students are also introduced to preventative medicine.

Fifth year: Study of the body systems, anatomy and diseases continues, working with text books and dissection of animals. More complex potions are studied, as are remedies involving herbs and stones. Intermediate Healing Charms are introduced. Students are sent to the infirmary for a couple of days each month. In there they will assist the nurses, learn how to care for patients and in emergency cases, observe.

For the OWLs: Students are tested extensively on body anatomy, common ailments and remedies. Students are expected to identify herbs, stones and other miscellaneous ingredients and properly list their benevolent and malevolent properties.

Sixth year: More time is spent in the infirmary, adding up to one week each month. Studies of remedies continue, working with intermediate-level potions and Charms. Dissection studies continue, involving larger animals, and students are expected to perform autopsies on these creatures to discover their cause of death. Young Healers are also taught emergency medicine - how to set bones, staunch blood loss, first-aid, etc - to prepare for instances when there are no potions, remedies or wands available to use magical means.

Seventh year: Advanced Charms, potions and remedies are covered. Students continue to spend time in the infirmary, still at one week per month. Rarer ailments and their symptoms are studied. Mental ailments and accompanying exorcism rituals are introduced.

For the NEWTs: Students who specialise in Healing are thoroughly tested, through written examinations and dissections, on their knowledge of human anatomy. Through more written examinations, they are tested on their knowledge of potions, remedies, leeches, the causes of disease, means of prevention and the humane care of patients. Practical examinations will cover a student's knowledge of Charms, the brewing of more advanced Potions and demonstrations of the student's skill in emergency Healing without magic.
