Home and Hearth studies are the Wizarding world's equivalent of Home Economics. The course is first offered in the third year in Hogwarts and runs until the seventh year. Though there are no restrictions on who may select this class, one cannot deny that the vast majority of the students are young Witches. Traditionally, very few Wizards have held any sort of interest for this elective. The class continues to maintain its popularity despite the increasing liberation of women in society. After all, people still have to eat, and not everyone has the privilege of keeping a House-Elf.
Third year: Students are introduced to basic cleaning charms. They are also taught how to magically cook a few basic recipes using real ingredients, set tables for company and keep a house looking tidy. In addition to making decorative crafts, students will sew simple projects (sleeping robes, pillows, etc.) using enchanted equipment and charms.
Fourth year: Intermediate cleaning charms are taught (for those really stubborn stains) and students are shown how to concoct basic cleaning potions. Cooking classes continue, with more complicated recipes but real ingredients. There are more decorative crafts and more sewing projects. The students are also introduced to fashion design.
Fifth year: Interior decorating is introduced, and fashion design is continued. Students are taught to sew and modify their own clothing based on their designs. Cooking classes now include the conjuration of simple foods to accent and enhance a meal.
For the OWLs: Students will be quizzed on their knowledge of cooking and sewing terms, guidelines for decoration and mixes for polish and stain-removers. Practicals will include the preparation of a three-course meal and one simple garment.
Sixth year: Transfiguration of ingredients is now introduced. (For instance, turning a potato into a parsnip) Cooking classes teach more advanced techniques to make a fanciful dish as well as creating meals that are considered to be ethnic or exotic. Sewing classes continue, focusing on more ornate garments for special occasions. Child and infant care is also introduced.
Seventh year: Child and infant care is continued. Cooking classes focus on the preparation of gourmet meals in a flash, using any available ingredients in the house. Sewing classes continue to teach the preparation of garments for special occasions, including weddings, dances and costumes for masquerades.
For the NEWTs: Students are quizzed through written exams on their knowledge of child care, cleaning potions, interior and fashion design and common terms. Through practicals, they must demonstrate their knowledge of crafts, sewing and the preparation of a five-course meal.
