Hogwarts Express MUSH

Considered to be one of the more unreliable fields of magic, Divination is the study of fortune-telling through the usage of palmistry, astrology and the interpretation of dreams, amongst other means. Although many disdain this branch of magic, it is an elective offered in Hogwarts from the third to the seventh year.

Third year: Students are introduced to the basics of Divination through the use of astrology charts, tea leaves and palmistry. Coursework includes essays and making interpretations of events to come in the short-term future.

Fourth year: The previous techniques are reviewed and studied more in-depth. Scrying through the use of a crystal ball is introduced, and students are expected to continue making predictions of future events.

Fifth year: Tarot Cards and Rune-Casting are thoroughly introduced, and the theories behind the I Ching and locational geomancy are covered. Preparation for the OWLs includes a review of techniques studied in previous years. The coursework includes predictions of future events as well as analyses of events happening in the present.

For the OWLs: Students are required to make series of predictions using each of the techniques that they have learned so far. Through written exams, students demonstrate their knowledge of locational geomancy and the I Ching.

Sixth year: The previous techniques are briefly reviewed, but coursework centres more upon individual study. Interpretation of dreams, geomancy and dowsing are included as mandatory subjects. In addition, students begin preparing for their NEWTs.

Seventh year: Individual study is the focus of the seventh year. Students must maintain working knowledge of dream interpretation, geomancy and dowsing, but each selects a region of the globe to study the lesser-known methods of Divination native to that region.

For the NEWTs: Students are expected to make accurate readings of the mediums used for their Divination. Written examinations and presentations are included.
