Hogwarts Express MUSH

This class is held mainly outdoors in the school's barnyards, and it teaches young Wizards and Witches the proper means of caring for Magical Creatures. They are taught how to safely handle the animals, what their dietary needs are and about their behavioural patterns. Care of Magical Creatures is offered as an elective from the third year to the seventh year.

Third year: Harmless creatures such as Nifflers, Clabberts and Imps are introduced to the students. They are taught to care for them, and classes involve hands-on interaction.

Fourth year: Hands-on interaction continues, and students are given one creature to tend for the entire year while they learn about its dietary needs and growth. In the meanwhile, they are introduced to other Magical Creatures, kept controlled by the Professor.

Fifth year: More hands-on work, though the creatures that the students tend are more demanding. A few Charms are taught that assist in maintaining the creatures' health (such as the Talon-Clipping Charm).

For the OWLs: Students are expected to have completed a project detailing the entire life cycles of a Magical Creature that has at least a level four Ministry rating.

Sixth year: Students are introduced to rarer creatures and more dangerous creatures, and classes take a turn towards veterinary medicine. In addition to tending to creatures throughout the year, students are taught to recognise common diseases and disorders.

Seventh year: At this level, students are given permission to tend a semi-dangerous creature (such as a Hippogriff or Abraxan). It should be noted that they remain the property of the school or Ministry, unless privately purchased after graduation. Extremely dangerous creatures (such as Dragons or Basilisks) are not allowed. Students continue their veterinary studies and prepare for the NEWTs.

For the NEWTs: The creatures that students have been tending throughout the year are inspected and are graded accordingly. Students are tested through written examinations on their knowledge of other specimens of Magical Creatures, their afflictions, the appropriate remedies and their needs for growth.
