Charms are taught throughout all seven years at Hogwarts, although they can be taken as an elective after the fifth year. Charms are a type of magic spell concerned with enchanting an object, and in opposition to Curses, they are generally benevolent in nature. The course is designed to introduce students to the various types of charms and their mundane as well as special uses.
First year: Introduction to Charms. Textbook study of the various kinds of Charms as well as their opposing hexes, jinxes, and curses, as well as the difference between a charm versus an enchantment. Intense study on the proper pronunciation of incantations and the accompanying wand motions. Introduction to candle magic and simple, everyday-use charms.
Second year: Continued textbook study of the various types of charms and their corresponding curses/hexes/jinxes. More advanced fire magic and more complex charms for everyday-use. Continued study of more complex incantations and wand motions.
Third year: Introduction to enchantments on small inanimate objects. Advanced continuation of types of charms explored in previous years.
Fourth year: Introduction to Charms as a mode of transport, including summoning and banishing. Introduction to enchantments on large inanimate objects. Continual review of types learned previously in more advanced forms.
Fifth year: Comprehensive review of all types of charms learned throughout the first four years. Introduction to enchantments on small animate objects. Work on advancing skill and complexity of spells already learned.
For the OWLs: Students will have to demonstrate, through practicals, their knowledge of Charmwork. Through written essays and examinations they must be able to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of magic.
Sixth year: Introduction to enchantments on medium-sized and large animate objects. Students choose a type of charm in which to specialize, such as fire, shielding, movement, etc. while maintaining at least intermediate levels of comprehension in all other areas.
Seventh year: Students continue the study of their specialization, spending the majority of their time in lab work. Those who choose Charms as their areas of specialization for the NEWTs are required to choose a second specialization and study the combination of those two areas independently.
For the NEWTs: Students again demonstrate their knowledge of their Charms through practicals and written examinations.
