Arithmancy is a form of Divination that relies solely upon numbers and calculations. It is the study of Numerology, Gematria, Magic Squares and Dice Rolling. Students who take the advanced course delve into the study of individual numbers.
Third year: Students are introduced to the arts of Numerology, which is the forming of analyses of personality traits and behaviour patterns. Through number charts, birth dates and a person's name, they are taught to predict the future and assess the present.
Fourth year: The study of Numerology is briefly reviewed, but the foci for the fourth year student are the arts of Gematria and Magic Squares. Magic Squares is the analysation of the number of strokes in a Chinese character. With Gematria, number values from 1 to 800 are assigned to letters of both the Greek and Hebrew alphabets. Coursework for this class, in addition to learning these systems, involves researching linguistics.
Fifth year: In preparation for the OWLs, students review the arts of Numerology and continue work in Gematria and Magic Squares. They are also introduced to divination through Dice Rolling, using grids and random elements to predict the future.
For the OWLs: Students are tested rigorously in their knowledge of the main topics discussed in class, using essays to describe the history of these Divination techniques. Number charts and complex calculations are also expected to be completed.
Sixth year: Individual study is stressed at this level, and pupils of Arithmancy begin to delve into exploring the magical properties of individual numbers. Coursework includes review of the basics.
Seventh year: Individual study continues, and students are expected to form their own theorems regarding numbers and magical formulas. The coursework of previous years is also reviewed.
For the NEWTs: The first half of the examination tests the student's knowledge of Numerology, Gematria, Magic Squares and Dice Rolling. Number charts and calculations are expected to be completed in a given time limit. For the second half of the exam, students are expected to have prepared a thesis paper.
