Mackled Malaclaw (XXX) - The Malaclaw is a creature of the shore and coastline. It resembles a lobster, but its flesh is poisonous. The Malaclaw's bite gives the victim bad luck as long as a full week. Reaching up to a full foot in length, its shell is usually grey with deep green spots.

Manticore (XXXXX) - This terrifying beast has the body of a lion and the head of a man. Its tail is that of a scorpion with many barbed stings that the beast can shoot at its victims, bringing instant death. Its pelt repels all known charms. The Manticore was originally described by Ctesias as a creature from India, but its name is Persian in derivation, meaning: "maneater." The manticore has also been illustrated by Aristotle and Pliny. It has rows of razor sharp teeth that line its huge jaws from end to end. It eats everything of its prey, including bones, clothing, and possessions.

Merpeople (XXXX) - Sentient beings which live underwater in villages at the bottom of lakes and seas. In Scotland, they have grey skins and green hair, and from their lower torso down are comprised of a silvery fishtail. However, they vary as greatly in appearance as do humans throughout the world. Merpeople speak Mermish, a language which sounds like a horrible screeching noise but which is understandable underwater. In 1949, the Merpeople caught a Hippocampus off the coast of Scotland and domesticated it. Merpeople are also known as Sirens (Greece), Selkies (Scotland), and Merrows (Ireland). All merpeople love music.

It only comes out at the full moon when it dances on its enormous flat feet, sometimes leavmng intricate patterns in wheatfields (much to the confusion of Muggles). The silvery dung of the Mooncalf, if collected before the sun comes up, makes an excellent fertilizer for magical plants.

Mummy (Spiritual) - A mummy is a frightening creature, possibly a manifestation of a Curse left behind by ancient Egyptian wizards. Actual mummies are the preserved remains of deceased people of ancient Egypt. Apart from its novelty value in having been raised from the dead and horrendous morning breath, the mummy is not a particularly dangerous creature. Its slow, shambling walk makes escape child's play, and it can be destroyed through various means - burning its bandages and shattering the canopic jars holding its organs to name a couple. They are extremely frightening to muggles, and the presence of a Mummy almost always signals the simultaneous presence of a possibly dangerous curse meant to protect the tombs. Egyptian wizards were very careful about protecting their treasure.

Murtlap (XXX) - The Murtlap is a rodent which lives along the seashore. On its back is a growth resembling a sea anemone which when eaten gives a person resistance to curses. The Murtlap will attack anyone who steps on it, although it usually eats crustaceans, not people's feet - most of the time, anyway.

Niffler (XXX) - The Niffler is a black fluffy creature which burrows in dirt as if it were water, living in tunnels up to twenty feet below the surface. They have long snouts and are extremely affectionate. Nifflers are strongly attracted to anything shiny and they can be very useful for finding treasure. They are favored pets of goblins who hold them in high esteem for their treasure finding abilities.

Nogtail (XXX) - The Nogtail is a demon which resembles a piglet and curses farms. The Nogtail slips into the sty and suckles an ordinary sow; the longer it goes undetected, the more devastating the curse that falls upon the farm. The Nogtail is difficult to catch, but if chased off the farm by a pure white dog it will never return and the curse will be lifted.

Nundu (XXXXX) - The Nundu is considered by many to be the most dangerous beast in existence. It is a gigantic leopard, native to East Africa, whose breath carries disease and death. Whole villages have been wiped out by the Nundu. It takes a full complement of over a hundred wizards to subdue a Nundu.

Occamy (XXXX) - This beautiful creature is native to the Far East and India. It looks like a feathered, winged snake, up to fifteen feet in length. Occamy eggs are shelled with soft, perfectly pure silver and the mother is extremely protective of them.

They also have the magical ability to find a person in order to deliver a message or suitable parcel for their size. Most owl are able to do local delivery to the surrounding counties. Experienced owls can find anyone in the country. It takes an exceptional owl to make international deliveries accurately. There are many species of owls, and generally the larger the owl the more suitable it is for long travels. Owls in general are proud creatures and enjoy a special relationship with their wizards, often becoming jealous if the wizard chooses to have another familiar in addition to the owl.
